Greetings, Fairy Folk!
I'm sorry I didn't write about this sooner, but Kate and I were trying to work out whether it would be possible for me to buy Enchanted Conversation from her because I think it's such a shame that the magazine has to shut down. I have such a deep affection for the site and while I'm glad Kate is starting a new project, I will be so sad to see it go. Unfortunately, legal stuff prevents Kate from changing EC's non-profit status and I'm currently *cough* unemployed, so I can't exactly afford to fund a project without the possibility of it paying for itself someday. For all of you who love the magazine as much as I do, all I can say is: I tried!
There's a chance I might try to start up my own fairy tale magazine with the same principles as EC, but I'm still figuring out whether it's financially feasible for me. I would hate to be broke and have to stop after a single issue!
Since I'd be relying a great deal on this fan base, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

I'm not financially stable enough to support a new project monetarily, but I would definitely be a dedicated reader and would spread the word in every possible venue! I love that EC went so far as to offer professional payment levels for their writers--especially because the available writing generally becomes higher quality. Still, I think lowering the writers' pay (or even doing away with it, and paying with publicity if you absolutely must) wouldn't stop writers who are passionate about fairy tales from submitting quality work.
I really hope EC survives in some form--there is nothing else like it out there, and I think there is a definite place for it in the fairy tale community.
Well I would love to see a new incarnation of EC. Tahlia, have you considered a kickstarter appeal?
Yes, Deborah, you are totally right. I've been looking into Kickstarter. Using it would probably involve me offering a special edition print version of our first issue as a reward to donors, but as soon as I feel like that's a promise I can make, I will probably start up a campaign there. Thank you for the advice!
EC offers something really special and it would be such a shame to see it go.
It might be worth considering a base rate payment for contributors, lower than the professional pay rate - writers may have been drawn to EC because it payed professional rates, and not because of what it offered. By reducing payment you might find more dedicated fans of the genre writing, because for them it is more than just about money...and for you that would mean less expenditure and less time spent reading the offerings of writers who are only in it for the money?
The idea of start-up donations is good, and you could ask for donations each issue to help fund the next - maybe print the names/promote the blogs of those who donated as an extra incentive?
It would be great if EC could be kept going, I have everything crossed! xx
That's excellent advice! I will work on setting up a donation widget with incentives. Thank you for the suggestions!
