Brothers Grimm Movie: Did You Like It? Update!

I keep up with what other bloggers write about fairy tales through an Igoogle app. Today, I ran across the blog "This Miss Loves to Read," which, naturally enough, is devoted to books and reading. It's a good blog and I encourage you to check it out. Like some other bloggers, she has a Fairy Tale Friday meme, but unlike this blog, hers is not largely about fairy tales.

What got my attention was that Irena, who manages the blog, wrote a positive review of The Brothers Grimm movie. I was surprised, because my students have panned it from class to class over the course of the last few years.

Because of this, I've never even tried to see the movie. So I ask, Did you see the movie? Did you like it?

On a completely different matter, I noticed that Irena uses Mr. Linky. I am sorry to say this, but I have been to Mr. Linky several times, but have yet to figure out what function it performs that is different from other functions like labeling and linking through the platform one uses to blog. Any explanations?

Image from movie, The Brothers Grimm. The late Heath Ledger is on the left and Matt Damon is on the right.

Update: I've wasted my time on movies with worse reviews than what you all have written here. So, I think I'll get it into my Netflix queue. Although we won't be seeing it too soon, as we have just purchased Dexter, Season Four, and are riveted. A dark tale of magical-seeming powers.

I pretty much hate gore and violence, but I love Dexter. Go figure.

If you're looking for a historical, scholarly study of the lives of the Brothers Grimm, no, you will not like this movie.

If you go into it expecting a somewhat cheesy fantasy movie with nods and tributes to many fairy tales, this is more up your alley.

I really enjoy it -- I knew it wasn't about the historical brothers, going into it, so I wasn't disappointed on that count. It's a little silly/kiddish, but it's fun to watch for all the references -- and they range from common stories to some of the more obscure ones -- and Ledger and Damon have a nice dynamic.

Whoa! I didn't even recognize them-amazing what makeup does, isn't it?

I have not seen it, but I'm interested. I'll see if there are any trailers available. :)

Hm... Did I like it? It was entertaining and had some interesting approaches. It was not a heavily intellectual film or dedicated to retelling a particular story, but it did provide amusement.

It's an 'interesting' movie, with some quite funny parts, but I personally felt it failed to capture the magic and mystery that so many of those Grimms Tales contain. The settings and costumes were very interesting and I did love the forest scenery. I suppose as a movie on it's own, it was o.k., but it failed to take the stories seriously on a number of levels. I wasn't overly impressed, but it wasn't a total flop either.

I have this movie on my top 5 fav fairy tale movies post - at #1 - I love this movie! Moderately dark, quirky, and supernatural. The cast was terrific, and it is a rare movie that I can watch over and over again.

I'm very glad that I watched this movie as it is wildly imaginative and visually stunning. However, as with the other films by this director that I have seen, I found it strangely hollow. I can't quite put my finger on what it is about this film that doesn't work for me, but whatever *it* is, I find that Terry Pratchett's work leaves the exact same bad taste in my mind. There is so much about these artists' works that I should and do enjoy, but it is like they are cooking my favorite dishes with some unknown spice that I'm allergic to.

So many people, fairytale fans or not, pan that movie. But I loved it. I loved the creatures and the hat-tip references to stories that the Brothers Grimm did write in life. I thought they did an excellent job, and it's definitely one of my lazy evening go-to movies.

Found you through Dani's site, and because it mentioned Fairy Tales AND Heath Ledger, I had to come over and take a look.
I own everything that Heath Ledger has been in, except for "Home & Away", and I loved "The Brothers Grimm"! Originally Matt and Heath were to play each others parts, but they changed at the last minute.
Have you watched "The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus" or the Tim Burton "Alice in Wonderland"?
Both are really very good, but it was a shame that "Alice" went straight to D.V.D. here in England.
I love movies like that!

I enjoyed it. It wasn't the best, it wasn't the worst. But it had some great scenes, and I'm sad that we no longer have one of the brothers around.

i liked it. it was a little mish-mashy (thrown togeyther) & it felt like it was written for the pythons. however, heath ledger & matt damon were great. heath ledger in particular was wonderful. monica belluci was lovely & subtly funny as well.

I suppose you must see it, and at least there is Heath and Matt so its pleasant enough on that account. I do like dark takes on fairy tales but this felt dark without the right edge and emotion.

As a prof with an interest in fairy tales, I definitely think is is worth your time to watch it and see what you think.

That said, I enjoyed it because I felt there was a truth of spirit in the dark portrayal of the story. This is not Disney-fied in any sense, and I love that a fairly mainstream film with big name actors brought the darkness of the older fairy tales to bear. Too often "fairy tale" equates to "Disney" and I liked seeing a different representation put forth on a mass level.

The story draws on parts of several actual fairy tales while building it's own plot. It has very little to do with the historical figures of the Grimms, but knowing that up front should mitigate disappointment on that front.

This is random and I know it won't count as a blog entry. I just wanted to state that I LOVE Dexter and Season 4 was by FAR the best season so far! I can't wait to see what Season 5 has to offer. It's funny that you mention Season 4 though because I think Dexter could be a fairy tale by the new definition I know of as a fairy tale. He almost had it all.

I tried to find blog about Lilith because we were discussing her in class the other day and I wanted to share with you about a TV series that I watch. I didn’t know where to post my comment about it so I chose this blog because it talks about Dexter, which is also a show that I like to watch. Growing up as a catholic, the first time that I had ever heard of Lilith was when I was watching the series called Supernatural. They just finished their fourth or fifth season and I am obsessed. It is about evil magical characters that exist in real life and “hunters” go out and hunt them. The way I described it is not so great, but the show is fantastic. The show has tricksters, poltergeists, angels, demons, vampires, werewolves, and pretty much any other supernatural characters you can think of. In one of the seasons they introduce Lilith as the first human that the Devil turned into a demon. She is considered the strongest demon there is and is also the key to freeing the devil from his cage. Anyways, our conversation in class about Lilith completed my understanding of her on the show. I do highly recommended that you watch the show, I think you would really like all the supernatural characters that they use.

I saw the Brothers Grimm Movie and I loved it. I am not really into the whole magical movie thing but I really liked this movie for some reason. My step dad was watching it and it caught my eye and before I knew it I was hooked watching it. It was like a fairy tale for grownups. I actually had never read the Brother’s Grimm until this class. The movie did a good job I thought at telling the tale. It also was very entertaining movie. It had a lot of humor and excitement. The actors were also very good and popular actors so that is probably another reason I like it so much. There are for sure differences though from the movie and the story in the black book from class. I do not remember there being a wolf. It was actually a witch I think. So that was a big difference. I do not know of that is because it is based off a different story or what. But I did like the movie and it is worth seeing.
