This is one of those days when I have got to write something, but my brain just doesn't want to. I can't concentrate. My mind is sullen and resentful. I feel tired already, and it's not 10 a.m. But here I am. It has been too long since my last post, and neglected blogs are very sad indeed. So here is a story called "The Sovereign of the Mineral Kingdom," from a 19th-century book called Fairy Tales of the Slav Peasants and Herdsmen, by Alexander Chozdko. Illustrations are by Emily Harding.
The story seethes with warnings and portents about vanity, but revels in the details of a prideful beauty's downfall, making it fun to read.

Sorry you're not feeling well, but everything will get better soon.
Great story by the way.
This story "The Sovereign of the Mineral Kingdom" is a great example of being concerned with only the outer appearance of someone. Unfortunately, this young lady could not see any further than a carriage of brass, silver, or gold. Along with the carriages, she dreams of a king that will bring her riches and the kingdom will bow down to her.
How unfortunate that she did not care to look any further than the riches before her when her king finally came for her. She was destined to live out her days within her metal reality because she wanted nothing more than precious metals and to be admired by her peers. Because of her selfishness and vanity, she would not experience what true love and devotion by someone else truly feels like.
How tough for her mother to watch her vain daughter throw away two chances that her daughter could have to be truly happy with a man to love her and give her a warm, stable home.

Excellent stuff. I strongly believe all fiction should have a sharp point somewhere. resonates with me.

It is sad that this young lady had too much pride. She was blinded by her pride and couldn't see that her dreams were just dreams and not livable for a human.
Depending on the culture, pride can be viewed as a vice or as a virtue. I think a little bit of a sense of pride is necessary for everyone. For example, being proud to be an American or Chinese. Or proud to be part of a team that wins the super bowl. Being proud to stand up for something you believe in and fighting for it. It gives us a sense of meaning, purpose, and satisfaction with our life.
But when someone has too much pride, they become selfish and refuse to listen to others.

Well Kate, I must say that, "The Sovereign of the Mineral Kingdom", is a story that really does have a sharp point to it. One of the things I would rather point out though is the fact that when you made this post, you started out by saying, “This is one of those day when I have got to write something, but my brain just doesn’t want to.”
This is interesting to me in the way that no matter how you felt in your brain, you had something inside of you that was just dying to get out. And regardless if your brain wanted to shut down, oh, it was coming out. I love the fact that when it did come out, it came out with a sharpness that grabbed the eye, and your curiosity, and made you want to continue reading till the end. I like a good read and I thank you for this blog spot so I can find as many as I want as well as contribute a few.

The story is a sad one but a story to think about in real life. A lot of people think having money (gold) is their possession will make them happy for as long as they have the gold. The daughter is selfish and only thinks of herself and nobody else. She is only interested on money and appearance and that’s not a way of living life. I understand the mother is worried about her daughter but I think letting her go is the best thing for the mother. She doesn’t have to suffer as much as having her daughter by her side. A person being selfish is no someone I would like to live with.
The sad part about the story is that she deserved what she got because she didn’t take her mothers advice. She will never be happy with her choice and I think she will always regret not being respectful and kind. Having that kind of a lifestyle with always being selfish is not going to get you really far, it’s only going to hurt you and the people that really care of you.
